The Jefferson Parish Department of Streets is responsible for maintaining road surfaces, bridges and street drainage (24" and under) in unincorporated (which excludes Grand Isle, Gretna, Harahan, Kenner, Lafitte, & Westwego) Jefferson Parish. While maintaining over 3200 lane miles of streets, the Streets Department also does preventive maintenance, repairs, and rehabilitates existing streets.

The Streets Department administers contracts to private contractors for various maintenance procedures and develops capital improvement programs for major streets. We also coordinate long range planning and work with the Engineering Department, the Department of Transportation and Development for Louisiana, as well as other agencies to facilitate improvements to roadways under municipality jurisdiction.

1. How can I get my Street repaired?

For minor and emergency repairs, call the Streets Department Main Office at 349 -5800. Requests for more extensive repairs will be forwarded to Pavement Management Division of the Streets Department Contract Administration Division. The maintenance department will investigate each request and recommend the project for inclusion in the appropriate maintenance program.

2. Who maintains certain roadways in Jefferson?

State Highways are maintained by the Department of Transportation and Development: 1440 Highway 90, Bridge City, LA (504) 437-3100. Streets within the incorporated areas of Jefferson are maintained by the City in which they are located. Streets in unincorporated areas of Jefferson Parish are maintained by the Streets Department.

3. Who is responsible for the sidewalks & driveway aprons in Jefferson?

According to Council Ordinance No. 16613 adopted September 25, 1986, the homeowner is responsible for the installation, repair, or maintenance of the sidewalk and driveway aprons. It is also up to the property owner to maintain the parish right-of-way (grass area) between the sidewalk and street.

4. When will my street be repaired?

Repairs of streets are determined according to notification of the complaint and the severity of the problem. When placing a call for service, please be sure to get your Service Request number for future reference.

5. Why aren't the streets inspected and repaired on a scheduled basis? / Why do I have to call a problem in?

Jefferson Parish utilizes a pavement management system as well as other factors to determine the scheduling of routine maintenance projects.
