FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JEFFERSON PARISH TO HOST THIRD PUBLIC OUTREACH MEETING
FOR MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE
JEFFERSON, LA – The Jefferson Parish Department of Floodplain Management & Hazard Mitigation will be hosting its third public outreach meeting regarding the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie, LA 70001) in the Jefferson and Napoleon meeting rooms.
This meeting will focus on hurricane, tropical storm and flood hazard risk in Jefferson Parish, while providing an overview of the multi-jurisdictional planning process. In partnership with the LSU AgCenter, there will be special activities, including hurricane-themed food and drink demonstrations, hazard trivia and puzzle giveaways.
The purpose of a Hazard Mitigation Plan is to help state, tribal and local governments increase education and awareness on natural hazards and community vulnerabilities; build partnerships with government, organizations, businesses and the public to reduce risk; and identify long-term strategies for risk reduction with input from stakeholders and the public. Additionally, Hazard Mitigation Plans help identify cost-effective mitigation actions that focus resources on the greatest risk areas and communicate priorities to potential funders. The multi-jurisdictional planning process integrates planning efforts and risk reduction with other community planning efforts and works to align risk reduction with other state, tribal or community objectives. FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plans are not only helpful in implementing both long- and short-term community goals, but are also required in order to receive Hazard Mitigation Assistance (HMA) funding from FEMA.
