Q: How do I apply for a Jefferson Parish job?
A: Applications are only accepted online. Current job openings can be viewed online. Once you find a position that you would like to apply to, click on the green "Apply" link. You will be directed to the login page for NEOGOV, the online application in-take system. If you have never applied for a Jefferson Parish position online, you will need to create an account. Once you have created your account, you can login with your username and password to edit and submit your application and view the status of your application. For further details about applying online, view our Online Employment Application Guide.
Q: What if I do not have access to the Internet to apply for jobs online?
A: The Eastbank and Westbank Personnel Departments have computers available to applicants who do not have Internet access. In addition, Jefferson Parish Libraries have computers with Internet access that are available to applicants.
Q: What are the civil service application and hiring procedures followed by the Jefferson Parish Personnel Department?
A: The Jefferson Parish Personnel Department is the "clearing house" for jobs in a number of departments in Parish government, including the departments of Streets, Water, Drainage, Sewerage, Animal Shelter, Planning, Jefferson Community Action Programs, and many others. Some departments hire new employees frequently; for others, only a few replacements are required each year.
When a job vacancy occurs in a Parish department, the department head submits a request to fill the vacancy to the Personnel Department. The Personnel Department maintains eligibility lists, which contain the names of job applicants who have been qualified for employment. In most cases, the names on the eligibility lists are ranked according to the applicants' scores on a competitive civil service exam. When the request to fill a vacancy is received, the top candidates are referred to the department head for interview. The department head can appoint any one of the individuals referred by the Personnel Department.
The Personnel Department publishes civil service job announcements as additional names are needed on the employment lists. Job announcements typically include the job title, salary information, description of the work involved, qualification requirements, type of test(s) involved, application deadline, etc. Some announcements have specific deadlines, while others are open on a continuous basis until a sufficient eligible list has been established. Job applications are only accepted online. Current job announcements are posted online for the general public, as well as for the promotional opportunities (i.e., jobs requiring current employment with the Parish). Announcements also can be viewed at the application offices indicated below.

Your application should be filled out carefully and completely, including a record of your work experience and addresses where this experience can be verified. Failure to give complete information may result in rejection of your application or may lower your score where such information is credited as part of the final grade. Applicants may request accommodations or assistance in completing employment applications.
Applicants will be notified about whether their applications have been accepted or rejected, and admission notices will be mailed to qualified applicants when an assembled test is required. A competitive test may include a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test, an oral interview, or any combination of the above. Some jobs are filled on a non-competitive basis, requiring only that the applicant meet certain basic qualifications. Applications for examination shall be open to all persons irrespective of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, or disability; however, permanent Jefferson Parish residents will receive preference on certifications for employment over nonresidents.
Q: If the class of work I am interested in is not currently open to application, how can I be notified when applications are being accepted?
A: Complete a job interest card online. You can view job descriptions online by clicking on the "We'll Notify You!" link. Then, you may browse the class titles to find out which ones interest you. When you find a class that interests you, click on the link "E-mail me when jobs like this become available." Fill in your information, and click "Submit Request." When this class of work opens for application, you will be alerted of the impending opportunity.
These cards are valid for one year from the day they are completed. You may also visit one of our offices to fill out a job interest card.

Q: As a Parish employee, will I be eligible for annual pay increases?
A: The first six months of employment in a position is a probationary period unless extended to a maximum of one year. Successful completion of a probationary period results in permanent status in that class of work and a one-step approximate 5% pay increase. The attainment of permanent status also establishes your "eligibility date." Every year at that time, you will be evaluated on your work performance, attitude, and attendance. A satisfactory evaluation will make you eligible for a one-step increase. This will continue until you reach the maximum pay in your class of work.
Q: What benefits am I eligible for upon entering Jefferson Parish employment?
A: Paid vacation time (annual leave) is accumulated by employees at the initial rate of one-half day for each biweekly pay period worked, which equals 13 days of annual leave per year. The rate of accumulation increases after five years and after ten years. Accrued but unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from the service. An equal amount of sick leave is available for personal illness or medical consultations. Nine official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials. Non-exempt employees, who must work over 40 hours in a week, are paid overtime or are credited with compensatory time off at a time and a half rate. (This does not apply to exempt employees). All regular employees can receive a life insurance policy along with partially paid basic and major medical insurance. Special leaves of absence (e.g., military service, maternity leave, etc.) may be granted in accordance with the Personnel rules. Most employees become contributing members in the Parochial Employee Retirement System.
Q: I have forgotten my username and/or password from my previous application. Can the Personnel Department look it up or reset it for me?
A: The Personnel Department does not have access to look up or reset your username and/or password.
You can reset your username and/or password though by going to the login page and clicking on the "I forgot my username and/or password" link. From here, you will need to enter your e-mail, first name, and last name (exactly as entered in your account previously), and you will then be sent an e-mail containing your username and/or in order to reset your password.
Q: Do I have to fill out an application for every position I would like to be considered for?
A: Yes, a new application must be completed and submitted for each position for which you would like to be considered. However, the NEOGOV application system saves your information, so that you are able to use it as a basis for future applications.
Q: Is there any way to change information on my application after I have submitted it to the Personnel Department?
A: No, once an application is sent in to the Personnel Department, there is no way to edit the information on that particular application.
You can however update your contact information by logging into the NEOGOV application system and clicking on the link "Edit Personal Profile". This will save your changes and update your contact information the next time you submit an application. If you need to update your contact information on an application already submitted to us, you will need to e-mail us at Jeffjobs@jeffparish.net or call 504-364-2730.
Q: What does Promotional and Limited Entrance mean on a job announcement?
A: Promotional refers to current Jefferson Parish Civil Service employees with permanent Jefferson Parish civil service status applying for a position with a higher pay grade than their current classification. Limited Entrance refers to current Jefferson Parish Civil Service employees with permanent Jefferson Parish civil service status applying for a position with the same or lower pay grade than their current classification.
