Rodent Control

Jefferson Parish currently provides a program of integrated pest management of Commensal Rodents in Jefferson Parish. The program provides exterior inspection and public education to residents, inspection and control measures on public right-of-ways, and disaster/disease response services.

Jefferson Parish residents can request an exterior inspection at their home, or report rodent activity by calling (504) 731-4612.

The rodent species known as commensal are the house mouse (Mus musculus), the norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the roof rat (Rattus rattus). The movement of rodents is usually related to food, water, or harborage. Although we need not be alarmed about the occasional rodent around the home, yard, or restaurant, it is important to be aware that rodents can directly transmit diseases through feces, urine, or saliva or indirectly transmit diseases through ticks, mites, or fleas.

For information about rodents and disease please visit the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website

Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions around their home:

  • Keep trash cans tightly covered, and lawns and yards free from debris.
  • Dump pails, unused flower pots, toys or equipment in which water can accumulate (standing water also provides a breeding area for mosquitos).
  • Close holes in building foundations, under steps, sidewalks, or porches.
  • Clean outside eating areas and outdoor cooking equipment, including around bird feeders and barbecue pits.

Please note, MCS inspectors do not bait or set traps on private property, but provide valuable, detailed information, guidance and recommendations. Residents who are experiencing a rodent problem are advised to contact a licensed, professional exterminator to provide treatment.
